Supermarkets in Tulum

Tulum offers a mix of large supermarkets and smaller stores to cater to diverse needs:

  • Chedraui: As the largest supermarket in Tulum, Chedraui Selecto is a top choice for both visitors and locals. This upgraded version of the store offers an extensive selection of fresh produce, meats, baked goods, household items, and a wide range of international products—perfect for those looking for specialty or imported goods. Conveniently located along the main highway, it’s easily accessible by car, bike, or taxi and is often the go-to for stocking up on essentials.
  • Súper Akí: A more budget-friendly supermarket, Súper Akí offers a good range of basic groceries and pantry items. Although it has a smaller selection compared to Chedraui, it’s a reliable option for quick trips and weekly staples.
  • Mi Bodega Aurrera: It is a Mexican discount store owned by Walmart de México y Centroamérica, known for its budget-friendly prices, even more affordable than Super Aki. You’ll notice that it’s mostly locals who shop here, with very few tourists or expats. The store has an informal vibe, often with unpacked boxes lining the aisles, highlighting its focus on affordability over aesthetics.
  • Soriana: A solid mid-range option that offers everything from fresh produce to clothing and electronics. While it provides a good shopping experience, Soriana is located a bit further from the town center, so it may be less convenient if you’re staying in central Tulum. Still, it’s a good alternative for those who don’t mind the drive.

Specialty Grocery Stores

For organic produce, health foods, and specialty items, Tulum also has a few smaller stores that cater to specific needs:

Tulum Liquor Stores

For those looking to purchase beer, wine, or spirits:

  • Chedraui: Along with groceries, Chedraui has a liquor section that includes a variety of local and international brands. You can find everything from tequila and mezcal to imported wines and craft beers.
  • Tequila Shops on Main Road in Tulum Pueblo: There are several shops in downtown Tulum that are primarily aimed at tourists, selling tequila and a range of other liquors. These shops offer convenience but keep in mind that prices here are often marked up significantly compared to other local options.
  • La Europea: Located inside Go Mart, La Europea is a popular destination for liquor lovers in Tulum. They offer a wide range of premium wines, spirits, and liqueurs from around the world. Whether you’re looking for a fine bottle of wine, tequila, or other international liquors, La Europea is a great choice for high-quality selections.

Stores are only allowed to sell alcohol in Tulum from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM on Monday to Friday. On Sundays it is only allowed until 5:00 PM.

Grocery Delivery in Tulum

If you’d rather avoid the trip, several services in Tulum offer grocery delivery, allowing you to enjoy the convenience of having essentials brought to your door:
  • Rappi: While Rappi is a popular delivery app across Mexico and partners with stores like Chedraui, it doesn’t work in Tulum.
  • Local Delivery Services: For reliable local delivery in Tulum, Tomato.mx is the go-to app. It’s the only local delivery app that consistently works well, providing an easy way to order from various stores. This service is especially useful for those staying in vacation rentals or hotels.
  • Grocery shopping by Your Tulum Concierge: We also offer a shopping service, which is mostly used by groups that are staying in a villa and want groceries for the week or for a party. Our fee starts at 40 USD.

Best Practices for Shopping in Tulum

  • Cash or Card: Many supermarkets and larger stores accept credit cards, but smaller shops and specialty markets may prefer cash. It’s best to carry some pesos to avoid issues.
  • Reusable Bags: In an effort to reduce waste, Tulum banned the use of plastic bags. So either bring your own bag or buy a reusable bag at the shop (around 1 USD, but not available everywhere).
  • Timing Your Visit: Supermarkets in Tulum, especially Chedraui, can get quite crowded in the afternoons and weekends. Visiting during off-peak hours—typically mornings—is recommended if you’re looking for a more relaxed shopping experience.
